Karachi (Digital Post) Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases is a major public sector cardiac facility located in the heart of the city, operating under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and providing essential cardiac care services to the public.
The institution is overseen by Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, with the Metropolitan Commissioner serving as Vice Chairman and Prof Riffat Sultana as Secretary and Executive Director.
According to sources, when the current administration took charge, several key departments including operation theatres and cath labs were non functional due to technical faults and administrative issues. Reforms were later introduced, including biometric attendance, elimination of ghost employees, and improvements in governance.
These efforts led to the establishment of a pathology laboratory, CMS ICU, Blue Code Unit, and High Dependency Unit, providing round the clock medical services. A digital library was also developed and registered with the Higher Education Commission, while the institute secured affiliations with College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and Sindh Medical Faculty.
However, sources allege that negligence by certain staff members and political influence continue to affect institutional discipline, highlighting the need for strict administrative oversight
