Islamabad (Digital Posts) — Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig Admits Prison Is Overcrowded

Share

Islamabad (Digital Posts) Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig has acknowledged that the prison is holding more inmates than its capacity. “There are currently approximately 8,000 prisoners in the jail, and the number of inmates exceeding its capacity is an issue,” he said.

He stated that the government is considering the problem of the growing number of prisoners in jails. The construction of a new jail in Islamabad would reduce the burden of prisoners on Adiala Jail by half.

The jail superintendent said that no compromise is made on prisoners’ rights. Judicial officers regularly visit Adiala Jail. Six male doctors and one female doctor are posted at the jail, where medical facilities including ECG, ultrasound, dental care, and other healthcare services are available.

According to Sajid Baig, the medical facilities available at Adiala Jail may not even be accessible to prisoners outside the jail. There are approximately 100 HIV cases at Adiala Jail. Most prisoners with HIV, he said, already have the infection when they enter the jail.
