Rahim Yar Khan (Digital Post) An important emergency meeting of the District Press Club (Registered) Rahim Yar Khan was held under the leadership of Acting President Sheikh Jahangir Ashraf and General Secretary Sikandar Zaman Chaudhry. The participants strongly condemned what they described as a false and baseless case registered by the police against journalist and Press Club member Arsalan Shaukat Mahandrah.

The meeting was attended by former presidents Rana Imtiaz Ahmed Khan, Mian Ehsan-ul-Haq, Qaiser Ghafoor Chaudhry, Asim Siddiq Bhatti, Chaudhry Javed Iqbal, Chaudhry Shehbaz Ahmed, former general secretaries G.M. Haider Sidhu and Zaheer Anwar Malik, Information Secretary Chaudhry Waseem Ameer, senior members Sardar Nazar Abbas Rand, Chaudhry Farooq Riaz Gujjar, Ghulam Haider Mangrio, and other journalists. Detailed consultations were held regarding the matter, and various proposals and future strategies were discussed.

Participants stated that if the police position is based on facts, they should clearly explain to the public the grounds on which the case was registered and the facts behind it. The meeting demanded a complete and transparent accountability process for the officer who allegedly ordered the registration of the case, so that no journalist would face punishment for speaking the truth in the future.

It was unanimously decided that the journalist community stands with its colleague, who they say has been targeted for raising a voice against obscenity and immoral activities, and that the case registered by the police would be challenged at every available forum.

The meeting also unanimously decided to completely boycott police coverage until justice is provided.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to continue the struggle for freedom of the press, truth, and justice, and stated that no form of pressure would be accepted. Authority was also granted to the District Press Club cabinet to announce future courses of action, which all members pledged to follow.

Acting President Sheikh Jahangir Ashraf said in his address that journalists are the eyes and voice of society, and any attempt to silence them raises serious questions about both press freedom and the justice system. He added that they would continue to stand by the truth regardless of pressure.

General Secretary Sikandar Zaman Chaudhry stated that such actions by the police are unacceptable. He emphasized that the journalist community remains united and will continue to raise its voice at every level against what it considers an injustice against its colleague, even if strong protests become necessary.

A large number of journalists participated in the consultative meeting.
