Karachi (Digital Posts) Daily referrals of patients from Indus Hospital to government hospitals have become a matter of concern.

This practice is adding further pressure on already resource-constrained public sector hospitals.

Karachi The transfer of patients from Indus Hospital to other government hospitals in Karachi continues unabated. According to sources, hundreds of patients are being referred daily to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and Civil Hospital Karachi. Reports suggest that after waiting for hours in the emergency department, patients are referred elsewhere on the grounds of non-availability of beds or lack of facilities.
Recently, a patient suffering from severe pain was shifted to another hospital citing non-availability of a bed. Sources claim that even minor gallbladder surgeries are not being performed, while a patient with abdominal fluid accumulation was also referred out.
According to the In-charge of Jinnah Emergency, a large number of patients are being transferred daily from Indus Hospital, increasing the burden on public hospitals. It is noteworthy that Indus Hospital operates as a charitable institution with the support of the Government of Sindh.
The administration states that the hospital has 1,350 beds, making it the third largest hospital in the province. It also claims to have 36 operation theatres, outpatient department (OPD) services, and modern emergency rooms. According to the spokesperson, approximately 765,000 patients are treated annually, with over 4,000 patients visiting daily.
However, the continuous rise in referrals has raised serious questions regarding administrative efficiency and the availability of facilities. Citizens are demanding that if resources and capacity exist, basic and routine cases should be managed at Indus Hospital to reduce the unnecessary burden on other government hospitals.
