Haripur (Crime Reporter): Yesterday, during an open court, the DPO Haripur in some manner presented low police salaries as a justification for corruption. Hearing this caused severe shock and sorrow, that from institutions responsible for establishing justice, voices are emerging that are declaring corruption as “justified.”
While talking to the media, Chairman Pakistan Journalist Defense Council Malik Rizwan Chauhan said that no doubt in this era of inflation salaries are low, but does a common laborer, whose income is even less than that of a police official, have the right to betray his duties?
Corruption is not only about taking money; rather, it is the murder of the trust that the public places in the state.
When a protector himself turns into a robber and takes pride in it, where should the oppressed go for justice?
We must certainly talk about increasing salaries, but giving corruption the name of “compulsion” and sanctifying it is equivalent to hollowing out the foundations of society.
For any senior police officer to justify corruption by using “low salary” as an excuse is not only morally wrong, but also a serious violation of law and oath.
As long as police officers keep covering up the corruption of their own department personnel, corruption can never be eliminated from our society. Regretfully, the support that the DPO Haripur has taken in the name of low salaries to hide the corruption of his uniformed brothers has shattered the trust of the people of district Haripur in the police department.
The educated and aware people of Haripur have strongly demanded from the IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and DIG Hazara Division that such police officers be set right in district Haripur and that a DPO who truly protects public rights be posted in Haripur.
