ISLAMABAD (Digital Posts) Development isn’t simply increasing money or constructing huge buildings. This is also about the enhancement of education, health, work, technology and quality of life of the common people. There are many developing countries which have achieved a great success in the field of development but yet there are lots of issues like poverty, unemployment, economic issues and poor educational facilities. Under these conditions, countries start to rely more upon each other for cooperation. Global Development Initiative (GDI) is one of these initiatives by China. Its foremost objective is to foster international development and build partnerships between developing countries.
The Global Development Initiative was launched by the Chinese President Xi Jinping at the UN General Assembly in September 2021. This is primarily done to raise awareness of the world on the critical development issues and support the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These objectives are to end poverty, to provide quality education, to improve health, to provide access to clean water, to provide employment and to protect the environment.
One of the main features of this initiative is that development is not limited to economic statistics. Instead the needs of ordinary people are also given importance. China believes that every country should have the opportunity to develop according to its own needs and circumstances. For this purpose countries are encouraged to benefit from one another’s experiences, resources and technologies.
South–South cooperation refers to the exchange of knowledge, experiences, technology, skills and resources among developing countries. The word South in this term is not limited to countries located in the geographical south. It generally refers to developing countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and other regions. For example if one country adopts an effective method to increase agricultural production it can share its experience with other developing countries. Similarly if a country makes progress in digital education its experience can also benefit students and educational institutions in other countries.
The advantage of this cooperation is that countries do not have to find solutions to every problem from the beginning. They can learn from one another successes reduce costs and take better steps to solve common problems. The United Nations also considers South–South cooperation an important means of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. However this form of cooperation does not replace international cooperation between developed and developing countries. Instead it complements it.
China’s Global Development Initiative gives priority to several areas that are important for the future of developing countries. Poverty is not only a lack of income. It is also connected to limited access to education, healthcare and basic facilities. This initiative emphasizes cooperation to reduce poverty improve agricultural production and strengthen food security. If farmers have access to modern farming methods better seeds and relevant training their productivity can increase.
A healthy and educated population is essential for the development of any country. The exchange of medical experiences, training, educational resources and technology among developing countries can help improve people’s lives. In the modern world, artificial intelligence, the internet and digital skills have become important tools for development. If developing countries provide their young people with training in modern technologies new employment opportunities can emerge. At the same time it is important to reduce the gap between people who have access to digital facilities and those who do not. Climate change, water shortages and natural disasters are major challenges for many developing countries. Therefore joint efforts to promote clean energy, environmentally friendly technologies and the better use of natural resources can play an important role in the future.
There are several areas where Global Development Initiative and South–South cooperation between China and Pakistan can be useful. To address the education, technology, agricultural development, energy and employment challenges and the impacts of climate change, Pakistan needs to strengthen its institutions. Pakistan needs to build its institutions to meet education, technology, agricultural development, energy and job creation and impacts of climate change challenges. Through the lessons learned from other developing countries, Pakistan can implement effective strategies to enhance these sectors.
The current economic ties between China and Pakistan also offer an excellent basis for cooperation. If both countries pay more attention to modern technology, research, technical education and training to the youth then the Pakistani youth and students can also benefit from it. Research and training collaborations between Pakistani Universities and China’s universities, artificial intelligence training, agricultural research projects and renewable energy projects might open new avenues. But, the benefits need to be delivered to local communities and skills need to be developed in practice by young people for these projects to be successful. In addition, Pakistan should make sure that cooperation projects are in line with national priorities. Simply stating projects is not sufficient. Evaluate their results, costs and benefits for the public is also important.
The Global Development Initiative of China presents new opportunities to enhance South–South cooperation. With effective use of their resources and experiences, countries can make progress in reducing poverty, enhancing education, developing technology and creating employment opportunities. Joint projects can also be used for the smaller and less developed countries to obtain modern skills and resources.
To conclude, China’s Global Development Initiative is a valuable initiative for global development and the development of South–South cooperation. The success of its operations relies as much on the amount of lessons that countries learn from each other as on the number of tangible steps that they are willing to take to address common issues.
