RABAT– August 3, 2026 (Digital Post): The Kingdom of Morocco has named the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway the “Donald J. Trump Highway” in a powerful symbol of the deep friendship and strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States, as well as the mutual esteem between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
In a letter dated July 2, 2026, King Mohammed VI informed President Trump of the Royal decision, praising the strength of Morocco-US relations and recalling President Trump’s historic 2020 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, which the King said gave unprecedented momentum to bilateral ties.
Stretching approximately 1,055 kilometers, the expressway is described as one of Africa’s most significant road infrastructure projects. Connecting Tiznit with Dakhla through major southern cities including Guelmim and Laayoune, it forms a strategic north-south corridor and contributes to improved connectivity, safer transportation and the movement of people and goods.
The highway is part of Morocco’s development model for the Southern Provinces and supports the country’s broader vision of developing the Atlantic corridor as a platform for economic development, regional cooperation and shared prosperity with African countries.
President Donald J. Trump expressed his appreciation for the gesture in a message shared on Truth Social on July 26, saying he looked forward to traveling the entire length of the highway someday.
The development comes as the United States continues to reaffirm its recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the basis for a just and lasting solution.
In a message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s 27th Throne Day, President Trump also highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries, Morocco’s role in promoting peace and security, and cooperation in areas including the Abraham Accords and the Sahel.
The U.S. President further emphasized prospects for expanding economic cooperation, particularly in energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and defense, describing the partnership as entering a new era focused on prosperity and the interests of both peoples.
The naming of the “Donald J. Trump Highway” therefore stands as a highly symbolic expression of the exceptional strategic partnership and enduring friendship between Morocco and the United States.
