Karachi(Digital Post) : PMDC Delegation Visits JSMU to Review PhD Programs

Karachi (Report: Pir Bux Noonari)Karachi Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) delegation visited Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) today to conduct a review of the university’s PhD programs. The visit acknowledged the council’s regulatory authority as the approving body for postgraduate medical qualifications, including PhDs in specialized fields like Biochemistry and Medical Education.

The delegation was led by Brig. (retd) Dr. Rehan Naqvi, Registrar PMDC, and included subject experts Prof. Dr. Gulrez Amin for Biochemistry and Prof. Dr. Usman Mahboob for Medical Education, along with Registration Officer Dr. Khalid Bhutto. The team assessed the university’s infrastructure, curriculum, and research output to ensure alignment with national regulatory standards.

Addressing the delegation, Vice Chancellor JSMU, Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, reaffirmed the university’s dedication to academic excellence. He stated that JSMU is committed to fostering high-quality research and education, welcoming the PMDC’s oversight as a means to strengthen the university’s resolve to enhance its postgraduate and doctoral programs.

During the session, Dr. Abdul Wahid Usmani, Director QEC, outlined JSMU’s strategic framework and highlighted key achievements. He shared that the university ranked 12th among 63 Pakistani universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, making it a leading public sector university in Sindh, and announced that the full-time faculty of JSMU has published 826 research papers as of July 2025.

Detailed presentations on the PhD and MPhil programs were subsequently delivered by academic leaders, including Prof. Dr. Syeda Kausar Ali, Chairperson of the Institute of Medical Education (IME), Prof. Dr. Farah Jawed, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Saima Aqil, Head of the Biochemistry Department. They elaborated on departmental structures, curriculum enhancements, assessment methodologies, and program learning outcomes.

The meeting was attended by JSMU leadership, including Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nighat Shah, Registrar Dr. Azam Khan, Principal SMC-JSMU Prof. Ambreen Usmani, Dean SIOHS-JSMU Dr. Muhammad Khalil Khan, Chairperson Post-Graduate Committee Dr. Kiran Rafique, and Prof. Dr. Asif Memon, Dr. qurratul Ain Inam and Dr. Bilal Edhi, Additional Director QEC, Dr. Surraiya Khatoon Director Administration Mr Sohrab Zaman, and Dr Hina Gul, Assistant Director, QEC.

The collaborative review marks a significant step in the university’s ongoing efforts to refine its postgraduate education framework in accordance with national regulatory requirements.
