ISLAMABAD (Digital Posts) The Smart Education of China platform launched in March 2022 and is at the heart of China’s digital transformation. By the end of 2025, the Ministry of Education said that the platform surpassed 178 million registered users in over 200 countries and regions had nearly 52 million visits per day and over 72.6 billion total visits. It has resources for over 130,000 of primary and secondary schools.

Imagine a huge library that is available to everyone at no cost. In rural counties today, students can view the same model lesson as students in Shanghai. The government has made an impact over through these years on the quality of education to every citizen and quality not quantity. The impact is also evident globally, the same document claims that by 2025 China will have risen from the 24th in 2023 to sixth position on a global scale for an index of digital education development.

In May this year, the Education Ministry issued two guidelines on artificial intelligence in school which was the most daring step taken. An AI curriculum has been planned for students, arranged grade-wise. According to another set of rules, primary school students cannot use open-ended AI content-generating tools independently and teachers cannot assign their core teaching functions to a chat-bot. It is likely that schools will also keep a list of approved AI tools and ensure that students do not over rely. In my opinion, guardrails are the smartest part of it all. With a scheme ‘AI + Education’ further stiffened, April 2026.

A number of schools around the world either banned chat-bots for students outright or rather accepted them with almost no restrictions. China adopted a balanced approach in which children are taught how the AI works but are not to allow the AI to think for them. This logic is similar to that of a calculator.

To address the disparity between city and village, the ministry has promised to offer more aid in rural education including teacher exchange and resource sharing ways to bridge the AI urban rural divide. The government’s assurance confirms that the difference does actually exist. The home device and internet connection only useful for working class children and the guidance they use on it. A teacher who is not trained to teach makes a smart classroom an expensive blackboard. Investment in people who use hardware must be steady and the same as that in technology.

CSET translators of Georgetown state that the 2026 Action Plan aims to leverage AI to enable enhanced classroom monitoring for teachers and students. Data can be effective in early identification of students at risk. However, if the assessing happens continuously, it may also turn the lesson into a never-ending exam.

The blackboard was nice but quite old. It was not abundant but rare. The pace of only one teacher’s hand so far was spread to the students in the classroom. China’s smart classrooms have gone beyond classroom walls to provide world-class lessons to hundreds of millions and to prepare the children of the country for an AI future.

A powerful tool does not make a good tool. Will it be possible to measure success by 2035 in terms of screens or users? The metric to consider is whether a rural school child feels as capable, curious and cared as a child in Beijing? As China focuses on teachers and students, its journey from chalkboard schools to smart classroom systems could become the model for developing countries everywhere.
