\nThe Khanewal Police have initiated a major crackdown against the alleged misuse of anti-rape legislation after registering separate cases against complainants and witnesses in three different rape cases that investigators claim were based on false or misleading allegations.
\nThe action, taken on the directives of District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Abid, has triggered widespread debate across the district regarding the alleged misuse of sensitive criminal laws for personal enmity, pressure tactics and family disputes.
\nAccording to police sources, the district police recently re-examined a number of cases registered under the Anti-Rape Act, 2021. During the review process, investigators reportedly found serious inconsistencies in three separate cases registered at Haveli Koranga, Sarai Sidhu and City Kabirwala police stations.
\nPolice officials said that in several instances, complainants and witnesses either retracted their earlier statements before courts or failed to substantiate allegations during investigation, prompting authorities to initiate legal proceedings against those allegedly involved in filing false cases.
\nIn the first case, registered at Haveli Koranga police station under FIR No. 206\/26, complainant Amir Sohail had accused his own brother of attempting sexual assault. The allegations created significant tension within the family and the surrounding area. However, after what police described as a detailed investigation involving witness accounts and judicial statements, the accusations were declared baseless. Authorities subsequently registered a case against the complainant under Sections 22-A and 22-B of the Anti-Rape Act, 2021.
\nThe second case surfaced at Sarai Sidhu police station, where complainant Muhammad Irfan and key witnesses in a previously registered rape case (FIR No. 600\/25) reportedly withdrew or contradicted their statements during court proceedings. Police sources said considerable state resources, manpower and investigative efforts had been utilised during the course of the case. Following the contradictions, police initiated legal action under Sections 182, 213 and 427 of the Pakistan Penal Code for allegedly misleading law enforcement authorities and misusing the legal process.
\nIn the third case, registered at City Kabirwala police station, a woman identified as Amin Shah had lodged a rape complaint under serious criminal provisions. According to investigators, the accused family suffered severe social and psychological distress following the registration of the case. However, during subsequent court proceedings, the complainant allegedly denied the occurrence altogether, leading investigators to classify the case as suspicious. Police later registered a separate case against the complainant under relevant provisions of the Anti-Rape Act.
\nPolice authorities maintained that false accusations not only affect innocent individuals and families but also place unnecessary pressure on courts, forensic institutions and law enforcement agencies, ultimately impacting the delivery of justice in genuine cases.
\nSpeaking on the matter, DPO Muhammad Abid said anti-rape legislation existed solely to protect victims and ensure justice for vulnerable individuals, adding that no one would be allowed to misuse such laws for blackmail, personal revenge or coercion.
\n\u201cThe law is meant to safeguard the oppressed, not to settle personal scores,\u201d the DPO said, warning that those attempting to mislead investigators and courts would themselves face strict legal consequences.
